It has been my honour to be one of the editors of Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science for the past decade, but now it is time to retire. I took over as editor for "Life Sciences - Europe, Asia and Africa" from Professor Ernest Naylor who had been one of the founding editors, along with Nic Flemming. As a council member and former honorary secretary of ECSA I had been involved in the background with the journal since its inception, but it was quite a change to become the front-line person.rnOver the decade from 2000 until now, the journal has undergone major changes. In 2000 the journal was published by Academic Press from its headquarters in London. At that time all papers were submitted as four paper copies. The paper copies were mailed out to reviewers, who frequently annotated the manuscripts and returned them to me along with a pro-forma questionnaire. After their return to the authors the final manuscripts were submitted as paper copies to the publishers, who then drew every figure again and type-set the text before its publication. Inevitably such a process took 12 months or more from start to finish.
