摘要

People act for the natural world when they care. Helping people care means turning their sensibilities toward 'green' values. Through discourse and lived practices we will come to care. A crucial step in this process is motivating actions needed to avert continuing environmental degradation. Telling stories in the right tone (or 'frame') is not enough because frames work best on citizens who already care about the subject, the environment. Consequently, the problem is not how to adjust our tone but rather how to help people overcome their alienation and disaffection from the natural world. Nature writing is the discursive practice that motivates people to act in response to a range of frames, sunny or gloomy. Ecological citizens, informed by the practice of nature writing, can reinvigorate the spheres of politics, decolonizing the lifeworld from liberal values, to reflect a political and democratic commitment to the good life-a flourishing and sustainable existence.
