摘要

Two of the recurring questions in the discussion of the ethical issues of synthetic biology concerns what synthetic biology is supposed to be and whether it requires a new ethics. With respect to the first question, there is general consensus that synthetic biology is a multifarious field that comprises a range of research programs such as bioengineering, synthetic genomics, protocell research, and unnatural molecular biology. The overall characterization that is usually referred to is this: synthetic biology is the design and construction of new biological parts, devices, and systems, and the re-design of existing, natural biological systems for useful purposes.
