The political process for a review of the 1986 Regulation on competition and maritime transport services, goes forward. The European Parliament (EP) is preparing (September) a resolution on the Commission White Paper on the review of Reg. 4056/86. On the other hand, the European Commission (EC) issued its final report (October). The 1986 Regulation is famous for its block exemption to some competition rules for certain practices by liner conferences, ie. price fixing and supply regulation. While the position of the Commission is unambiguous about the need to suppress the Regulation, this view is not shared by all and is also of direct consequences for other maritime sector than liners: tramping and cabotage.
