Moving outside their regular meeting format, four Central European countries - known as the Visegrad Group - met with their Romanian, Bulgarian and Greek neighbours, on 24 February in Budapest, Hungary, where the proposed 2030 energy and climate package featured high on the agenda. Since Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland have already signalled their intention to fight off any pressure to agree on a new long-term greenhouse gas emission reduction, observers say the so-called Visegrad+3 foreign ministers' gathering signals the formation of a growing regional alliance of member states that may challenge the European Commission's proposal next month.
