Though microsoft CEO steve Ballmer and other company executives were here Feb. 27 for the long-awaited launch of Windows Server 2008, much of their focus was on the future. Some of that focus was wholly positive. In interviews during the company's launch event, Ballmer and Bob Muglia, Microsoft's senior vice president for server and tools, spoke of the software vendor's plans around cloud computing, including planning a Windows Server. Net cloud development platform on which people will be able to build and deploy applications. However, company officials also had to speak of Microsoft's efforts to drive virtualization deeper into the enterprise despite the fact that its own hypervisor technology, known as Hyper-V and expected to ship immediately with Windows Server 2008, will be delayed for about six months. Analysts say the delay could inhibit commercial adoption of the operating system until the virtualization technology is released.
