During the past few weeks, Microsoft and Google have each made headlines with new online collaboration offerings. The two services, called Microsoft SharePoint Online and Google Sites, respectively, are intended to make it easy for individuals and teams within an organization to create ad hoc collaborative Web sites with limited strain on IT resources. Not surprisingly, Microsoft and Google have less-than-complimentary things to say about each other's products. However, I was particularly struck to read that while speaking at Microsoff s SharePoint Conference, Bill Gates had responded to a question about Google Sites by contending that Google doesn't understand the special needs of business and that Google's initiatives are somehow flawed because they grow out of what is primarily a consumer-focused search business.
