Siemens communi-cations' continued evolution toward becoming a unified communications software vendor includes not only a greater embrace of open technology but also a reduced dependence on Microsoft. The IP telephony provider March 3 further shifted its focus from voice to UC applications by launching a new software platform and UC suite. As part of its transformation into a software and services company, Siemens at the CeBIT show in Hannover, Germany, introduced its OpenScape Unified Communications Server and the first new applications in a suite for the server. The Linux-based UC server provides a common set of services for applications that ride on top of it. Those services include session or call control for voice, instant messaging, conferencing and video, as well as support for federated presence, quality of service, session or call detail reporting, availability management, and a license portal.
