Brazil's position at number seven in the world shipbuilding league is a creditable performance, particularly in comparison with European countries, but it is a long way from the number two spot it occupied in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In those heady days only Japan was building more ships in terms of deadweight and Korean and Chinese competition was little more than a future threat.
