As a Ukrainian former master mariner, Andrey Voloshin was in the best position to know what goes on aboard oil tankers, beyond the hype of annual reports claiming declining levels of accidents and incidents. Having specialised in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and chemical tanker operations and having operated from every corner of the globe, Voloshin knew that probably no more than one major tanker incident was reported per year - but away from the media radar, multiple incidents were going unreported. His chance to confirm and act on his suspicions came when he decided to step away from seafaring - a profession he entered at the age of 15 - to become an accredited tanker inspector. This transition, however, was not as easy as it may sound, he tells IHS Maritime.
