When the chance emerged to helm the Americas maritime division of DNV GL, Paal Johansen went after it. "I raised my hands - both hands - and raised my voice, in a very nice way," says the three-decade DNV veteran. He got the job. The historic merger of the two class societies, completed only four months ago, is already paying off in the United States, Johansen tells IHS Fairplay. LNG bunkering offers a clear example of synergies. DNV was "the first classification society to enter this business [LNG-fuelled vessels] through the Norwegian ferry industry. Now US shipping, especially the Jones Act sector, is swiftly realising that there is a player other than ABS [American Bureau of Shipping] that can help them."
