Period market rates for charter container tonnage remain stationary overall. Yet, China's rejection of the P3 vessel-sharing alliance involving the three largest container operators has revived some hope among owners of charter box ships. "Owners would have been doomed if the scheme had been allowed to go forward," said one Hamburg broker, who explained that harmonised network planning among the top three would have caused charter requirements to shrink dramatically in all sizes up to post-Panamax. "Charter owners would have just been second in line after the network planning departments of the individual P3 carriers," the broker said. "Only the requirements that could not be covered by any of the partners would have gone out to the tramp market. They would have spoken to the charter market with one voice."
