Turkish container shipping company Arkas Line is building its fleet and service network as cargo volumes show strong growth, particularly on lines to west Africa. It is five years since the Izmir-based company became a standalone entity after its split from the Arkas group's feeder business, EMES Feedering SAM, in 2009. It is focusing today on its west Africa services, which were begun in September 2012, with routes from the Mediterranean, north Africa, and the Black Sea. In March this year, Arkas added a fifth vessel, the 2,478teu Giilbeniz A, to the Mediterranean-west Africa service it operates with Madrid-based Spain-Equatorial Guinea specialist, Marguisa. The service, which calls at ports in Equatorial Guinea (Bata and Malabo), Ghana (Tema), Nigeria (Lagos), and Cote d'Ivoire (Abidjan), now offers weekly departures, as opposed to every 10 days previously. In May, Arkas Lines announced that two recently acquired secondhand vessels were joining its west Africa service.
