Having been hit by negative publicity since the Sewol ferry disaster, the Korean Register of Shipping (KR) is busy working on restoring customers' trust. Sewol, which was KR-classed, capsized on 16 April, leaving 304 of the 476 passengers and crew dead or missing. In the wake of the disaster, KR's then chairman and CEO Chon Young-kee resigned and executive VP Jung Young-jun stepped in as interim CEO. South Korean prosecutors visited KR's Busan headquarters and were handed relevant documents as part of the investigations into the disaster. A joint investigation by South Korean police and prosecutors showed that the ferry, owned by Chonghaejin Marine, was habitually overloaded and did not carry enough ballast water to maintain its stability.
