Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) announced earlier this month that between 10 and 20 Capesize bulk carriers are to be scrapped or placed in cold lay-up in an attempt to drag the coal and iron ore carrier division into profitability. With daily operating costs of $20,000 and revenue at just $4,000, it makes no sense to maintain a fleet of 100 Capes, one in five of which are trading on the spot market, the division's general manager, Jun Hoshino, told Fairplay.
