The growing size of vessels is causing increasing concern for underwriters as they warn that the loss of a mega ship would have severe implications for the industry at large. The insurance market expressed its unease about the growing size and complexity of vessels in the weeks leading up to the announcement by Maersk Line that it had placed the first orders for the world's biggest container vessels. The shipping giant revealed it had signed contracts with Korean shipbuilder DSME for 10 of the vessels with an option to buy another 20 (see p30). Each will have a capacity of up to 18,000teu and will be delivered between 2013 and 2015.
