Transport logistics operations for the offshore wind arrays planned off the German coast are heavily biased towards shortsea shipping, with large volumes of project cargo (foundations, piles, transition pieces, towers, nacelles, blades) expected to be shipped between Scandinavian, German and Baltic ports. Only a handful of windfarms are already under construction, but the numbers should ultimately rise above 70 in the German North Sea and to 14 in the Baltic Sea, according to the German Energy Agency. Construction activity should peak around 2013 or 2014, so it might not be long until barge, breakbulk, ferry and jack-up vessel operators see a notable increase in freight and chartering tenders.
