Ben Vree, chief executive of Smit Internationale, the towage and salvage to heavy-lift specialist, was showered with plaudits in December after dredger giant Royal Boskalis Westminster withdrew its takeover bid. Rotterdam shipping correspondents, meeting as Harbour Press Club Kyoto, even appointed Vree as Man of the Port 2008.rnHowever, some critics found the euphoria somewhat overdone. Henk Molenaar. former CEO of Rotterdam Port Authority, commented to Kyoto that Vice's efforts to turn Smit back to profitability and shake off the predator Boskalis had nothing to do with Rotterdam. Kvolo members had beenrnasked whether Vree's achievements were outstanding, both in the domestic and international context, but Molenaar believed thernaward was motivated bv sentiment.
