Buenos Aires's throughput is predicted to drop to about 1.3M teu this year, compared with 1.8M teu in 2008. The good news is that the port's chronic congestion may have eased somewhat due to less throughput. But urgent infrastructure and logistics improvements are necessary as larger ships from main trade lanes are displaced and redeployed to the region, according to Multimar president Patrick Campbell. Dredging of Buenos Aires's inner channels and turning zones (but not its inner basins), is under way by Jan de Nul. Its eventual 9.75m depth will be welcomed by hard-pressed Argentine pilots.
