Hurricane Ike devastated the burgeoning cruise destination of Grand Turk. "I've been living in the Caribbean for 25 years and I've never seen this kind of destruction," Carnival Corp senior vp for strategic planning Giora Israel told the Associated Press. Carnival has confirmed it will cease calls to the island for the foreseeable future. In a statement to Fairplay, Carnival explained: "Initial reports from our assessment team indicate damage to the island is substantial" and "it is going to take some time for Grand Turk to recover". Carnival said it was "not able to provide an estimate for reopening of the Grand Turk cruise facility. Once overall reconstruction on the island gets underway, we can better evaluate the situation."
