Recently, the two tanker Indices have tended to move in different directions.There was a marginal gasoline arbitrage window that opened up in the trans-Atlantic market for 37,000 tonne cargoes. Although date-specific, rates rose significantly, also driven by higher demand for heating oil in the USA. Levels rose from W195 to W240.There was also upwards pressure on rates in the Caribbeans for the normal 38,000 tonne parcels. This was not so much caused by an increase in demand, but more by a lack of tonnage as some of the Caribbean traders were drawn into backhaul cargoes to Europe. Therefore rates were only lifted by about 10 points to W 165.
