Maersk Sealand, the container shipping arm of AP Moller-Maersk, has a strategic advantage over its competitors in having its own shipbuilding division, Odense Steel Shipyard. Maersk's in-house shipyard, says Henrik Lund, analyst at Equities' Research at Den Danske Bank, is "a significant issue." Results from the group's own R&D are not leaked to other operators but Lund notes that the latest post-Panamax container ships in the Maersk Sealand fleet do not have ballast tanks, because the company has developed an alternative way to look after the stability of their ships through loading boxes, to meet this requirement.
