This article is based on the findings of the recently published (December 2002) MSI Shipbuilding Industry Planning Service (SHIPS) report. The report highlights the stark choices available to the shipbuilding industry if the capacity surpluses of the 1970s and 1980s are to be avoided, and the consequences of not taking action, which are a slump in prices and earnings across the board, and yard utilisation falling below 50 per cent.
