If oslo still needs a port, there seems to be little recognition of the fact at the municipal council. A couple of years ago, the council decided it wanted the port's prime waterfront sites for redevelopment, to be used for housing, commerce and recreation. However, the council did not solve the question of where the port should be located after the 2011 deadline for the redevelopment plan. Small ports along the fjord do not have the capacity nor the shipping services needed to supply the Norwegian capital with its consumer imports. But Anne Sigrid Hamran, who assumed the job of port director in Oslo last November, believes that a compromise can be found.
