The recent merger of two leading Durban ship repair companies (Fairplay, July 27, p16), International Marine & Construction (IMAC) and Dorbyl Marine (Durban), into Dormac Marine & Engineering has paved the way for a return to shipbuilding in the port. Dormac is to embark immediately on a multi-million-rand modernisation programme to return the two shipbuilding slipways and ancillary facilities to operational standards. And, although Dormac's activities will be primarily focused in the ports of Durban and Richards Bay, managing director Jens Nydahl hasn't ruled out the option of going to Cape Town and East London in the near future.
