This paper describes the history of the development of Continuing Professional Development in fire engineering, outlining the principles that shaped the policy of the Institution of Fire Engineers. The Institution's view on the role of professional bodies, employers and individuals in professional development is discussed. Potential future developments for the profession are raised before expressing views on the way forward for CPD in the fire service.
