In May of 2002 a Cirrus SR20 crashed near Angel Fire, New Mexico, killing the pilot, who was alone in the airplane. He had just taken off, and was trying to climb out of a valley that is aligned generally north-south, when he collided with trees on a mountain slope about 4.3 miles east of the airport. The 1,350-hour pilot had obtained his commercial license in 1971, and had about 100 hours in the Cirrus SR20 type. The airplane belonged to a flying club in Duluth, Minnesota. The probable cause of the accident, the National Transportation Safety Board decided, was the pilot's "decision to continue the flight into the rising mountainous terrain."
