I learned to fly in a comanche 250. Sky blue and white, N8012P—which now belongs, according to the FAA's online registry, to Jim and Raymond Bias-dell of Maricopa, Arizona—was a handsome thing, sleek and purposeful even in its tiedowns. Comanchess, unlike contemporary Bonanzas and Navions, parked in a somewhat nose-high attitude, like a panther settled back on its haunches and gathering itself to spring. The reason was prosaic: to keep the trailing edge of the wing low enough that a boarding step was not required.
