The Lancair Legacy is the quintessence of the modern high-performance homebuilt. It's an updated version of the original two-seat, retractable-gear Lancair airframe, which began as a 235—that is, with a 115 hp Lycoming O-235 engine—graduated to a 200 hp IO-360 and finally, in the significantly redesigned "Legacy" version, acquired the 310 hp Continental 550 that also powers the larger, and pressurized, Lancair IV. It's quite a performer, and an efficient one, capable of 220-knot cruise at 20 nautical miles per gallon. Competing at Reno, race-prepared Legacies do better than 300 knots around the pylons. The $50,000 kit—not including engine—has been popular; more than 120 Legacies are cur-rendy in the FAA aircraft registry.
