摘要

We were planning on flying to Florida that morning to avoid the afternoon heat and thunderstorms. We were delayed however, and the afternoon arrived with cloudy skies. The TV weather-man's cliche of "afternoon and evening thunderstorms" was the forecast. Our mountain home is located at the southern end of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Upstate of South Carolina on Lake Keowee. The morning was a typical summer day in the mountains with the humidity hiding behind a light cool breeze. By noon the attack was full on and the dew point was closing in on a temperature of 94° F with scattered clouds. My wife, a blue sky flier, always asks, "What's the weather going to do?" My answer is always the same: "What difference does it make? We gotta go anyway." The same answer I occasionally used if asked by the flight attendants when I flew for the airlines; just kidding of course, however, I only remember once delaying a departure because of local weather. I would then try to explain that I have very carefully checked the forecast and the current weather and will check once again before we leave. I never take a chance with weather. Later I will remember that comment with a little ironic anger.
