摘要

Long before any artifact is placed on display, Dorothy Cochrane, the museum's general aviation curator, has already been at work, sometimes for years. She's been digging through research files or handling the many tasks needed to procure, preserve and present some of the planet's most valuable aviation artifacts. And when Cochrane's work involves close scrutiny of the cockpits of the collection, it's easy for her to be transported back to a time long ago when that particular aircraft made history. "It happens all the time," says Dorothy, a private pilot herself with a few hundred hours in Cessnas and Citabrias. "I'm often in these aircraft for legitimate research reasons and I might find myself looking out from the pilot's seat of historically important airplanes, such as Jerrie Mock's Cessna 180, Spirit of Columbus. I think about what it must have been like for her to sit in that same seat in 1964 as she became the first female to fly solo around the world, alone at night over the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, experiencing a severe icing situation."
