Six airplanes—four cessna 180s, a 182 and a Maule—left a northern California airport early on a June morning bound for a destination in the Sierra foothills. They intended to make one en-route stop. The Maule was trailing the rest of the group by a few miles, and the others had already landed at the intermediate airport when one of them heard the pilot of the Maule report turning base to final for Runway 34. A witness about a mile from the airport saw the Maule flying northbound at about 100 feet. The airplane made two successive 360 degree turns, then descended in level flight before climbing again above the tree line, turning southbound, and making two more 360s. At the end of the second turn the airplane "fell to the ground." It struck in a steep, uncontrolled descent, coming to rest in a tomato field with its engine and propeller buried th esoft earth.
