In January 2003 a Cirrus SR20 with one aboard collided with high tension lines while on an instrument approach to Reid-Hillview Airport near San Jose, California. The accident occurred at the end of a 65 nm daytime flight in mild weather conditions, with four-mile visibility beneath a 1,200-foot broken ceiling and an 8,000-foot overcast. It should have been a perfect day for a pilot who had obtained his instrument rating less than three weeks earlier to practice his solo en route instrument flying. The examiner who had administered the pilots instrument check ride characterized him as "very detail oriented and also very knowledgeable about the Cirrus SR20." He had 460 total hours, 362 of which were dual instruction and 334 of which were in the Cirrus. He had logged 150 hours of IFR, 10.7 of which were actual. Despite all his preparation, however, this short and seemingly undemanding flight was destined to end badly.
