Maligned as the perfect tool should war break out with Canada or Mexico, Boeing's B-47 Stratojet was Strategic Air Command's (SAC) most numerous bomber... and brought it fully into the jet age. It was innovative in nearly every way - swept wings, six jet engines in underwing pods, faster than all but supersonic fighters and flown by a crew of just three. It was also a near disaster; plagued by production problems, it had grossly inadequate range, was dangerous to fly for an inattentive crew and for its first years of service was incapable of executing its mission. However, over time it earned a reputation as an effective medium bomber before retiring in 1965. Reconnaissance variants continued in service until 1967 and three were even employed as electronic warfare simulators with the US Navy until 1977. The B-47's greatest legacy, however, was its impact on the successful design, production, and operation of SAC's B-52 Stratofortress and KC-135 Stratotanker fleets, as well as its influence on the commercial success of Boeing's stable of jet airliners.
