A mural honouring AVM J E 'Johnnie' Johnson has been unveiled in Loughborough, the East Midlands town where the RAF's top-scoring Spitfire pilot went to school. Johnson is credited with shooting down at least 34 enemy aircraft (some believe the true tally to be higher), and remarkably all his aerial victories came against single-engined fighters. He went on to fly jets in the Korean War and rose to the rank of Air Vice-Marshal. In later life he set up a housing trust and was the subject of TV show This Is Your Life in 1985. He died in 2001.
