The DC-3 and its variants fulfilled numerous functions in many different nations. Pete West profiles a surviving C-47B Skytrain, formerly in service with the Royal Australian Air Force of the many roles carried out by the Douglas DC-3 it is probably its illustrious military career that has won it the most fame. Various incarnations such as the C-47 Skytrain and C-53 Skytrooper served with distinction for a vast number of air forces. The C-47B illustrated is operated in Australia by the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society. One of two flown by the Illawarra, New South Wales-based group, it has now been repainted in the Royal Australian Air Force markings that it wore in military service. Currently registered VH-EAF, it was delivered to the RAAF in May 1945 as 44.76774.
