As the April issue went to press, things were looking decidedly bleak for the Vulcan to the Sky Trust's plans to fly Avro Vulcan B.2 XH558 during the 2009 season. An appeal had been made to members of the public to pledge money towards the ￡1 million needed to secure another year of flying. After much nail-biting, the incredible sum of ￡956,835 was achieved by the deadline of March 6 and to much jubilation it was heralded that, subject to the vows being turned into cash, XH558 would take to the skies again.rnOn March 6, the Vulcan engineering team rolled XH558 out into the crisp spring sunshine at Bruntingthorpe, Leics, in readiness for a press conference. Facing redundancy if things did not go well, all the team knew that as of the previous Sunday the total stood at ￡480,000-well short of the target.
