The FDA launched an investigation of a number of low-acid canning manufacturers after four people got sick eating botulism-contaminated hot dog chili sauce during the summer of 2007. That investigation has led to an embargo of New Era Canning Co.'s low-acid canned products. New Era, a fourth-generation, family-owned processing company in New Era, Mich., processes more than 100 million pounds of produce annually, mostly under private labels but also under three house brands: New Era, Good Taste and Necco. Or, the company did, until FDA issued an Order of Need for EmergencyrnPermit in mid-January, which prohibited the company from manufacturing and transporting low-acid canned goods over state lines until FDA is assured the products are safe. Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA) used its authority to embargo all of New Era's low-acid canned products, effectively shutting down the processing plant.
