The shift to digital imaging is doing more than silencing the whir and the click of film cameras; it's also triggered an explosion in picture-taking. Lyra Research, a firm that tracks trends in the market, reckons that by 2009 half a trillion images a year will be snapped by mobile phones and digital cameras, compared with 200 billion last year and 40 billion in 2002. The boom, though, isn't making prints obsolete. It's doing the opposite, by spurring consumer interest in compact printers able to roll out photo-lab-quality pictures at home or on the go. Seiko Epson, Hewlett-Packard, Canon, Eastman Kodak, Samsung Electronics and others are bat-ding to grab more of that business.
