That black-and-white take on corporations was the dominant form of "socially responsible" investing when Michael Jantzi decided to get into the business in 1990. There's a problem with it. Striving too hard for purity, the investor winds up with a narrow, poorly diversified portfolio. Jantzi came up with a solution to the problem: Compare oil drillers not with internet companies but with other oil drillers. The comparative approach won't appeal to undergrads chanting "Divest fossil fuels," but it does sell on Wall Street. A decade ago Jantzi had a staff of 16. Today, as chief executive and second-largest shareholder of Sus-tainalytics, he presides over 320.
