Unlike a generation or two ago, most Americans now seem uninterested in the effort that fuels their modern ease. How else to explain why George Mitchell, Harold Hamm and Mark Papa are not (nor ever will be) household names on the order of, say, Mark Zuckerberg? Yet the technological revolution these men have ushered in since 1990-pioneering horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing to unleash a torrent of oil and gas that's reshaping civilization-has had at least some of the importance of "liking" your friend's new-baby photo.
