Brian behlendorf says he's not a very good programmer because "I use trial and error a little too much." Yet at the ripe old age of 21, Behlendorf orchestrated one of the most successful business software projects ever. He and fellow developers produced Apache, the free server software that today powers 70% of all Web sites. If copies of Apache were sold for the same price as Microsoft's comparable server software, its sales would total over $500 million. But Behlendorf didn't make a dime off it.
