摘要

November's presidential election shattered many myths (defined here as "certainties long held by political experts"): That huge numbers of new eligible voters added to the rolls were mostly Democrats. What happened? Few of the experts paid enough attention to the actions of Karl Rove, President Bush's chief political strategist. Mr. Rove, correctly, focused on how many—and, indeed, whether—supporters of the President were going to the polls to vote. He put together one of the most successful "get out the vote" drives in U.S. political history. He was quite open about what he was doing and rather clinically told reporters who bothered to ask and listen how many Republicans, new and old, would be visited at home or telephoned to remind them to vote for the President.
