Sid Karin, the soft-spoken director of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), is popular among his peers. But as he loped around the exhibit floor at the supercomputing show last November in Orlando, Florida, his mind was not entirely on the colleagues who greeted him. He was hyperfocused on one of the many initiatives he had on his plate back at his lab in La Jolla, California. And no wonder. One recent proposal resulted in an innovative computational process that models fluid flow through a porous material. A second proposal, which Karin and his team are working on now, involves modeling molecules to better understand skin friction.
