Algeria's Agence Nationale des Barrages has awarded three contracts with a combined value of $800 million as part of its program to ease continuing supply shortages nationally. SNC Lavalin of Canada has won an estimated $600 million contract to build a 600,000 cu m/day water treatment plant and pumping station at Taksebt, 100 kilometers east of the capital, Algiers. The work will involve the plant's design, the supply and installation of 90 km of ductile iron pipe and the construction of four 2.5 meter diameter tunnels with a combined length of 11.7 km. The plant will supply water to Algiers, Draa Ben-Khedda and Boudouaou. The award also provides for SNC Lavalin to operate and maintain the plant for five years.
