Saudi Arabia's Saline Water Conversion Corporation plans to appoint consultants to study options for privatizing the body, which could be implemented within three years. Bid invitations for the study are expected by the end of March. The chosen team, to include technical, legal and financial specialists, would advise SWCC on a pre-privatisation restructuring, and on possible models for privatisation, including the possibility of running some units as partnerships with the private sector. The study is expected to take one year. SWCC, which has thirty plants with one quarter of the world's desalination capacity, produces 3.4 million cu m of water per day, accounting for 60% of the Kingdom's water needs. Bids from contractors and pipe suppliers were due by the end of March for a $900 million SWCC water transmission scheme in the kingdom's western region.
