The troubled Melamchi Project to increase water supply to Kathmandu has run into further difficulties. Nepal's Royal Commission for Corruption Control has arrested the former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and a number of government officials over a contract for the project. The former minister for public works, Prakash Man Singh, had cancelled a contract with a Korean company in May 2004, after it had constructed just 1.6 kilometers of road in two years, and re-awarded it to a consortium headed by a Chinese firm.
