Storms, floods and droughts are the harbingers of destruction, the cause of constant human suffering and - for insurance companies - of billions of dollars or euros a year in payouts. So, with the US hurricane season apparently starting six weeks early, it is no wonder that the insurance industry should be looking at the spectre of climate change and the possibility that climate change will bring with it an intensification of what were once considered natural catastrophes but which now appear increasingly to have, at least in part, a man-made cause.
