Turkey and Israel have been conducting discussions over the possible construction of a pipeline to carry fresh water from southern Turkey to Israel. Speaking to GWR, a spokesman for the Turkish foreign ministry outlined the proposed scheme which has apparently received the backing of Israeli Associate Prime Minister Shimon Peres and has attracted the attention of an un-named British engineering company which is interested in conducting a feasibility study. To date discussions have focused on the possibility of laying a double pipeline to transport as yet un-determined volumes of freshwater and natural gas, as well as a fiber optic cable link from southern Turkey to the Israeli port of Ashkelon. he water, which the spokesman estimates could be as much as 300mil cu.m/yr would be sourced from one of three rivers venting on Turkey's east Mediterranean coast; either the Goksu at Silifke, the Seyhan near Tarsus or the Ceyhan River near the oil port of Yumurtalik.
