The city of Freeport, Illinois will not renew United Water's contract in 2007, Mayor George Gaulrapp said. The company will remain in an advisory role to ensure the city complies with state environmental standards. United Water, which is owned by Suez, faced criticism from City Council members earlier in 2005 when cost overruns for a storm sewer project became an issue during the city's budget process. The city's Water and Sewer Commission said United Water's Project Manager would depart in mid-December and would be replaced by an interim executive director. Freeport first contracted with United Water in 1997 to oversee and manage the city water and sewer commission's personnel and facilities. The city has three elevated water tanks, six wells, 28,000 customers and 120 miles of mains.
